Fab Find: Float Therapy Spa
Near the corner of Warner and Gothard, the big blue sign of Float Therapy Spa beckons. I thought spa hey, I could get into this. A nice reception area and the friendly owner, Maria Paculdo, welcome this novice to the idea of “floating.” Basically, float therapy involves lying on your back in an enclosed float pod filled with 200 gallons of water heated to skin temperature, infused with 1,200 lbs. of pharmaceutical grade Epsom salt (it helps with buoyancy.)
Some people call it a sensory deprivation tank but really if there’s anything you get deprived of – it’s stress. Float Therapy Spa is an escape from the stresses of daily life. But be warned, it takes some getting used to and is not for someone who is claustrophobic.
I’ve only been “floating” once but it was quite the experience. Inside the pod, you can change the colors and listen to music. I was restless for the first half thinking – what am I going to do here for an entire hour? But the idea is to NOT think and be in the moment, once I had figured that out, I managed to relax and just float. Before long, my hour was up. I was about ready to say nothing happened but I noticed that I was feeling a bit euphoric afterward like I had just had an espresso. I felt rejuvenated.
I told Maria I would come back the next time I needed an escape. I hear floatation therapy is great for athletes because it helps with pain management and healing. I haven’t been back but I also want to try their other services – the infrared sauna and ultrasonic lipo.
