Spotlight: Pinky’s Cupcakery | Baker for a Day
My eleven-year-old son has long had a fascination with cooking. Instead of cartoons on Netflix, he would rather watch a Food Network show. When I take him to the library, he’ll check out as many cook books as chapter books, and read them just as carefully. So, I was thrilled when he got a special invitation from Pinky’s Cupcakery to be “baker for a day” for his birthday!
When we arrived, we were given a tour of the shop and kitchen, and learned what makes running a commercial kitchen different than a kitchen at home. Vanessa Parker, the owner, was generous in her knowledge of running a successful business– from how she comes up with new flavor combinations, to factors that go in to pricing.
Next, we scrubbed our hands, put on aprons, and got to baking! When given the choice between making vanilla or chocolate mini-cupcakes, we chose six of each. While they were in the oven, we had a quick lesson in decorative frosting and practiced our swirls and dots. When the cupcakes were cool, we applied our new knowledge and frosted them like pros, finishing off with plenty of sprinkles. They tasted as good as they looked!
It was such a great experience for my son and made for a day he won’t soon forget!
If you’re looking for a similar experience, Pinky’s offers party packages featuring use of their fun facility (a huge assortment of games and an oversized flat screen television), a party host, customized chef’s hats, drinks, and cupcake decorating. Thinking outside birthdays, it’s a great option for office parties (cupcake wars, anyone?) and sports team celebrations.
Or, if your kids are as in to baking as mine, Pinky’s offers Summer Camp chef classes twice a week from 11-2. There, your kids get hands on time in the kitchen making and decorating cupcakes from scratch, as well as lessons in pizza and pretzel making, and kitchen hygiene.
Finally, Pinky’s is very active in the community. They provide catering services for events and school fundraiser nights with 20% of proceeds going back to the school.
For any of these or other services, check out their website or contact them at 714-965-3030. Pinky’s Cupcakery is located at 17908 1/2 Magnolia Ave. Fountain Valley, CA 92708
